Lymphedema

As a certified lymphedema therapist, Dr. Nguyen possesses specialized skills in the treatment and management of chronic lymphedema. Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling and fluid retention, usually in the arms or legs, caused by a compromised lymphatic system.

Comprehensive Assessment

Dr. Nguyen begins by conducting a thorough assessment of the patient’s lymphedema. This includes evaluating the extent and severity of the swelling, assessing any associated symptoms, and identifying any underlying causes or contributing factors. She will also review the patient’s medical history to gain a comprehensive understanding of their condition.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD s a specialized massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system, promoting the flow of lymph fluid and reducing swelling. As a certified lymphedema therapist, Dr. Nguyen is skilled in performing MLD to gently mobilize the stagnant lymph fluid and redirect it to functioning lymphatic pathways. MLD is typically performed in a specific sequence and rhythm tailored to the individual’s needs.

Compression Therapy

Compression therapy is a cornerstone of lymphedema treatment. Dr. Nguyen utilizes compression garments, bandages, or specialized wraps to apply consistent pressure to the affected limb, promoting the reduction of swelling and supporting the proper flow of lymph fluid. She will carefully assess and prescribe the appropriate compression therapy based on the patient’s unique needs.

Exercise and Movement

Dr. Nguyen emphasizes the importance of exercise and movement in managing lymphedema. She will develop an individualized exercise plan that includes gentle movements and activities aimed at promoting lymphatic flow, improving muscle strength, and enhancing overall function. Dr. Nguyen may collaborate with physical therapists to provide specialized exercises and guidance.

Skin Care & Hygene

Lymphedema can make the skin more vulnerable to infections and other complications. Dr. Nguyen educates patients about proper skin care and hygiene practices to maintain the health of the affected limb. This may involve regular cleansing, moisturizing, and taking precautions to prevent injury or infection.

Patient Education and Self-Management

Dr. Nguyen believes in empowering patients to actively participate in the management of their chronic lymphedema. She provides education on self-care techniques, including self-MLD, proper use and maintenance of compression garments, and strategies to prevent and manage exacerbations. Dr. Nguyen helps patients understand their condition, recognize warning signs, and make lifestyle modifications to minimize the impact of lymphedema on their daily lives.
